Russia Dock Woodland
Well who knew? Have been to Canada Water many a time on the Jubilee Line but have always snuffled my way up the canals to the Thames Path at Rotherhithe, from which you just trot along through Shad Thames to London Bridge. An interesting run but this was better. You come up in the lift at Canada Water, and upstairs, and across the road to the actual Water (a lake surrounded by superstores) – down a slope to the canal bank, turn right at Brass Talley Alley, then fork left down Archangel Street, and you can go left into Stave Hill ecological park or right, through a gate, into a place marked Russia Dock Wood. Amazing! Scents enough to keep a bloodhound happy; squirrels, big wide grassy bits to roll and wriggle on, muddy streams to plunge into – out of the corner of my eye I saw an unusually big and tall Daddy fox, practically a wolf, stop and have a good look at me; wisely I pretended I hadn’t noticed. Met a delightful friendly young mastiff bitch with a pink collar who appeared to have lost her person. After about half an hour of chasing and worrying, heard calling. Short drunk man appeared and took her away. She didn’t want to go, and I don’t blame her. Oh dear. Feel a social conscience coming on again. Survivor guilt. I’m just too sensitive, that’s my problem. Too nice. Grrrr. Grrrr. Sorry – only practising.
